Sadly, on Christmas Eve 2023, I lost my sweet buddy, Djin, to an unexpected illness that came out of nowhere. He was so many things to me: snuggle bug, sheep and duck herding dog, agility and dog parkour partner and, most important of all, my teaching assistant. Djin was my first puppy who I raised entirely through Games based Concept Training from day 1 and you may have heard me mention that I really, really loved how he turned out! He was born during Covid (April 2020) and completely home-schooled, yet when the world opened up again he was ready to tackle anything, without having had a lot of the experiences we may traditionally expose puppies to during their ‘socialization period’.
I was totally blown away how well this way of training works and before he was 3 years old, he was able to take on the role of becoming my demo dog for live classes and workshops. His job was to demonstrate the games and techniques to a bunch of strange people and their dogs and hang out on his boundary for the rest of the time, calmly minding his own business, while I was able to focus on teaching.

  • Potty training – one of the most important things in the first few weeks
  • Crate training – sleeping through the night, regular nap times during the day, loving his crate
  • Ditching the Bowl – how to use his food for enrichment and training
  • Calmness training – overcoming biting, zoomies
  • Confidence training – games to grow his confidence as he grows up
  • Recall training
  • Introducing the leash and walking on a leash
  • Vet visits – how to prepare for them
  • Grooming, nail trimming
  • Trips into town
  • Eventually, introduction to sheep

I’m pretty sure things won’t always go smoothly, they never do, and I’ll be sharing how I deal with these situations too: the good, the bad and the ugly!
